The US NPTE and Canada's CPTE, which replaced the PCE in 2026: scores, attempt limits, eligibility and dates compared.

NPTE vs PCE and CPTE: physical therapy exams confuse graduates and advisers because Canada's national exam changed in 2026, while many guides still describe the two-part Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE). A graduate who prepares for the wrong exam, or misses a registration deadline, can lose months of licensing time. This article compares the US National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) with the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination (CPTE).
The PCE had a written component and a clinical component. The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR) announced the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination in April 2025, with a first administration planned for January 2026, pending finalization of transition plans with the regulators. Nova Scotia's physiotherapy regulator reports that from February 28, 2026, the CPTE is the only pathway to full licensure in that province, and that applicants who do not hold a current Canadian licence and apply after that date must pass the CAPR exam.
The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) administers the NPTE. Before a candidate can sit it, the board of the state where they intend to be licensed must approve them, and the FSBPT eligibility page states that individuals must meet state requirements to be eligible for the exam or considered for licensure. The PT exam has 225 items in five sections of 45 items each, with 5 hours of testing time inside a 5 hour 30 minute appointment. The PTA exam has 180 items in four sections, with 4 hours of testing time inside a 4 hour 30 minute appointment. Both are computer-based and administered at Prometric testing centres throughout the United States.
NPTE dates are fixed in advance. The 2026 PT sessions are January 27 to 28, April 28 to 29, July 28 to 29, and October 27 to 28. Their registration and payment deadlines are December 23, 2025, March 24, June 23 and September 22, 2026. The 2026 PTA sessions are January 6 to 7, April 7 to 8, July 8 to 9, and October 6 to 7, with deadlines of December 2, 2025, March 3, June 3 and September 1, 2026. All deadlines fall at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. The October 2026 registration windows have closed, so check the FSBPT dates page for 2027 sessions.
FSBPT sets three limits for each exam level. A candidate may make at most three consecutive attempts, and after three consecutive attempts cannot register for the next exam date. The lifetime maximum is six attempts per exam level. The eligibility page also states that no more than two scores of 400 or less may be recorded after January 1, 2016, at an exam level.
CAPR states that the CPTE will be delivered virtually and will be accessible to candidates across Canada and internationally. Its announcement describes three question types: traditional multiple-choice questions, enhanced multiple-choice questions that use images and video, and oral questions. The regulators, excluding Quebec, have agreed in principle to use the CPTE as the national licensure exam. The Nova Scotia regulator describes the exam as completed virtually over one day, with a written section and an oral, scenario-based section scored against a single pass mark.
CAPR's dates page lists a sitting on October 24, 2026 with an application deadline of August 15, 2026, and a sitting on December 9, 2026 with a deadline of September 30, 2026. Both deadlines have passed. The first 2027 sitting is February 20, with an application deadline of December 12, 2026. The standard fee is $2,500. Candidates who passed the 2025 PCE written component can pay a discounted $1,800 from February through December 2026. Nova Scotia's regulator reports eight CPTE offerings in 2026, so check the current CAPR schedule before planning any sitting.
For the NPTE, the candidate needs a physical therapy degree from a CAPTE-accredited institution, or education that a recognized credentialing agency has found substantially equivalent, and approval from the licensing board of the target state. Internationally educated candidates therefore need that credentialing and board approval before they can sit the exam.
CAPR describes the CPTE as open to candidates across Canada and internationally. Questions about credentialling go to credentialling@alliancept.org. On portability, neither exam substitutes for the other. An NPTE pass supports a licence from a US state board, and a CPTE pass supports a licence from a Canadian regulator. A graduate who moves between the two countries must meet the other country's exam and board requirements. Candidates should treat each board's and regulator's own published rules as final, because requirements change and each body sets its own deadlines.
