Alberta HCA certification: how to prepare for the provincial competency assessment

Since Health Care Aides became a regulated profession in Alberta on February 2, 2026 (see health care aide scope of practice alberta for what that changed), completing an HCA program is no longer the finish line on its own — graduates also need to meet CLHA's registration requirements, which are assessed against the province's HCA competency profile. This is a practical guide to preparing for that assessment, not a legal summary of the requirements themselves; confirm the current process directly with CLHA before you rely on it.

What the assessment covers

The Alberta HCA competency profile spans the day-to-day scope of the role: assisting with activities of daily living, mobility and transfers, vital signs and reporting, documentation, and recognizing when to escalate to the nursing team rather than act outside scope. A course final exam tests whether you learned the material; a competency assessment tests whether you can apply it the way a regulator expects a practising HCA to.

Why it is not the same as your program final

Program finals are written by the instructor who taught the course and vary in format and difficulty between schools. A provincial competency assessment is written against a single competency profile that applies to every HCA in the province, regardless of which program they attended — so material that one program emphasized and another treated lightly can appear on the assessment either way.

How to prepare

Three things matter most: practising against the actual competency profile rather than a generic care-aide question bank, getting feedback on why an answer is right or wrong rather than just a score, and rehearsing scenario judgment — recognizing a change in a resident's condition and knowing whether it is within scope to act or time to escalate — rather than only recalling facts.
