CPNRE vs. NCLEX: what Alberta LPNs need to know

They're different exams for different roles, governed by different bodies. A quick, plain-language guide to which one applies to you.

By The ngnsimulation team

If you're entering practical nursing in Alberta, the CPNRE is your entry-to-practice exam — not the NCLEX, which is the registered-nurse pathway. Here's the short version.

  • CPNRE — Licensed Practical Nurses, regulated provincially (CLPNA in Alberta), 76 competencies.
  • NCLEX-RN / NGN — Registered Nurses, North American, clinical-judgment focused.
  • Internationally educated nurses may be directed to either, depending on assessment.

Preparing for the CPNRE? Lumina AI maps to all 76 competencies — see Lumina AI. Not sure which path is yours? Try the product finder.
