How to become a paramedic in Alberta: the EMR, PCP, and ACP pathway

To become a paramedic in Alberta, you register with the Alberta College of Paramedics at one of three practitioner levels. Each level has its own training, scope of practice, and entry-to-practice examination.

The three practitioner levels

• Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) — the entry level, providing basic life support and emergency care.
• Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) — the core ambulance role, with a broader scope including some medications and advanced airway skills.
• Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) — the most advanced level, with extended pharmacology, advanced interventions, and clinical decision-making.

Education and accreditation

Each level requires completion of an accredited program of increasing length and depth, typically progressing from a short EMR course to a multi-year ACP diploma. Many practitioners ladder up over time, gaining field experience between levels.

Registration and the licensing exam

Graduates register with the Alberta College of Paramedics and complete the entry-to-practice examination for their level, set nationally through the Canadian paramedic regulators and the Paramedic Association of Canada framework. Registration must be maintained through continuing competence.
