To work as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Canada, you complete an accredited program and pass the national certification examination administered by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
The CSMLS is the national certifying body for medical laboratory technologists and assistants in Canada. CSMLS certification is the standard credential employers and provincial regulators look for, and it is recognised across the country.
MLT certification requires graduation from an accredited medical laboratory science program, which combines classroom study with clinical placements across disciplines such as hematology, clinical chemistry, transfusion science, microbiology, and histotechnology.
Eligible graduates write the CSMLS certification exam. In regulated provinces — for example, Ontario, where the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario oversees the profession — you must also register with the provincial regulator to practise. Requirements vary by province, so confirm with the regulator where you intend to work.
