The NOTCE explained: Canada's occupational therapy exam

The NOTCE — National Occupational Therapy Certification Examination — is the written certification exam for occupational therapists in Canada, administered by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT). Most provincial regulators require a pass before granting a licence to practise.

Who writes the NOTCE

Two groups sit the exam: graduates of accredited Canadian occupational therapy master's programs, and internationally educated occupational therapists whose credentials have been assessed for eligibility. In both cases the exam is the national gate between finishing your education and registering with a provincial college.

What the exam covers

The NOTCE is a multiple-choice examination built around applied practice rather than recall. Questions present client scenarios — across physical, cognitive, and psychosocial practice areas and across the lifespan — and ask what the occupational therapist should do next: assess, prioritise, plan, adapt, or refer. The competency it tests is professional reasoning, not memorised definitions.

How it fits with provincial regulation

Certification and licensure are separate steps. CAOT administers the national exam; each provincial college — for example, the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario or the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists — sets its own registration requirements, of which the NOTCE is typically one.
